The Zeeman pattern of MnI lines is sensitive to hyperfine structure (HFS) and, they respond to hG magnetic field strengths differently from the lines used in solar magnetometry. This peculiarity has been employed to measure magnetic field strengths in quiet Sun regions. However, the methods applied so far assume the magnetic field to be constant in the resolution element. The assumption is clearly insufficient to describe the complex quiet Sun magnetic fields, biasing the results of the...

We introduce a comprehensive scheme to physically quantify both viscous and elastic rheological nonlinearities simultaneously, using an imposed large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) strain. The new framework naturally lends a physical interpretation to commonly reported Fourier coefficients of the nonlinear stress response. Additionally, we address the ambiguities inherent in the standard definitions of viscoelastic moduli when extended into the nonlinear regime, and define new measures...

The procedure in [Fuchs et al.] to obtain a fusion algebra from the modular transformation of characters in logarithmic conformal field models is extended to the (p,p') logarithmic models. The resulting fusion algebra coincides with the Grothendieck ring of the quantum group of the (p,p') model.

The study of rotation and activity in low-mass stars or brown dwarfs of spectral classes M and L has seen enormous progress during the last years. I summarize the results from different works that measured activity, rotation, and sometimes magnetic fields. The generation of magnetic activity seems to be unchanged at the threshold to completely convective stars, i.e. no change in the efficiency of the magnetic dynamos is observed. On the other hand, a sudden change in the strength of rotational...

The aim of this paper is to investigate ways to optimize the accuracy of photometric redshifts for a SNAP like mission. We focus on how the accuracy of the photometric redshifts depends on the magnitude limit and signal-to-noise ratio, wave-length coverage, number of filters and their shapes and observed galaxy type. We use simulated galaxy catalogs constructed to reproduce observed galaxy luminosity functions from GOODS, and derive photometric redshifts using a template fitting method. By...

GDP/capita correlations are investigated in various time windows (TW), for the time interval 1990-2005. The target group of countries is the set of 25 EU members, 15 till 2004 plus the 10 countries which joined EU later on. The TW-means of the statistical correlation coefficients are taken as the weights (links) of a fully connected network having the countries as nodes. Thereafter we define and introduce the overlapping index of weighted network nodes. A cluster structure of EU countries is...

Chaotic systems have been broadly exploited through the last two decades to build encryption methods. Recently, two new image encryption schemes have been proposed, where the encryption process involves a permutation operation and an XOR-like transformation of the shuffled pixels, which are controlled by three chaotic systems. This paper discusses some defects of the schemes and how to break them with a chosen-plaintext attack.

We have observed nearly 200 FGK stars at 24 and 70 microns with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We identify excess infrared emission, including a number of cases where the observed flux is more than 10 times brighter than the predicted photospheric flux, and interpret these signatures as evidence of debris disks in those systems. We combine this sample of FGK stars with similar published results to produce a sample of more than 350 main sequence AFGKM stars. The incidence of debris disks is 4.2%...

We report measurements of the frequency-dependent shear moduli of aging colloidal systems that evolve from a purely low-viscosity liquid to a predominantly elastic glass or gel. Using microrheology, we measure the local complex shear modulus $G^{*}(\omega)$ over a very wide range of frequencies (1 Hz- 100 kHz). The combined use of one- and two-particle microrheology allows us to differentiate between colloidal glasses and gels - the glass is homogenous, whereas the colloidal gel shows a...

In this paper we study the approximation of the distribution of $X_t$ Hilbert--valued stochastic process solution of a linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equation written in an abstract form as $$ dX_t+AX_t dt = Q^{1/2} d W_t, \quad X_0=x \in H, \quad t\in[0,T], $$ driven by a Gaussian space time noise whose covariance operator $Q$ is given. We assume that $A^{-\alpha}$ is a finite trace operator for some $\alpha>0$ and that $Q$ is bounded from $H$ into $D(A^\beta)$ for some...

We report on the optical spectroscopy of a single InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) doped with a single Mn atom in a longitudinal magnetic field of a few Tesla. Our findings show that the Mn impurity is a neutral acceptor state A^0 whose effective spin J=1 is significantly perturbed by the QD potential and its associated strain field. The spin interaction with photo-carriers injected in the quantum dot is shown to be ferromagnetic for holes, with an effective coupling constant of a few hundreds of...

The Standard Model Higgs suffers from the hierarchy problem, typically implying new states within the reach of the LHC. If the Higgs is very heavy (~500 GeV) the states that cutoff the quadratic divergence may be beyond the reach of the LHC. However, in this case precision electroweak data require the Standard Model to be augmented with new states at the electroweak scale. We study a very simple model, with no new colored states, that allows a heavy Higgs whilst remaining consistent with...

We construct (anti)instanton solutions of a would-be q-deformed su(2) Yang-Mills theory on the quantum Euclidean space R_q^4 [the SO_q(4)-covariant noncommutative space] by reinterpreting the function algebra on the latter as a q-quaternion bialgebra. Since the (anti)selfduality equations are covariant under the quantum group of deformed rotations, translations and scale change, by applying the latter we can generate new solutions from the one centered at the origin and with unit size. We also...
